Research and Development Facilities

There are 3 main R&D facilities in the United States that "cover the earth" with projects of global significance. Opportunities to further expand your career path exist in regional labs, plant environments, and international assignments. Our research facilities are located in:

Cleveland, Ohio-The Breen Technology Center (BTC)Breen Technology Center

Primarily responsible for developing innovative processes and products for Sherwin-Williams' architectural brands (including, but not limited to: Sherwin Williams, Dutch Boy, Pratt & Lambert, and Martin Senour.) In addition, long-term research and polymer development initiatives allow BTC to support innovative products across other divisions within the company. Our technical talent experiences the thrill of discovery and problem solving in such of areas as product development, coatings research, color technology, and process engineering.




Warrensville, Ohio-Automotive & Diversified Brands Campus

The Automotive Finishes R&D laboratories in suburban Cleveland are creating the most technologically advanced products in industry segments that demand coatings with great appearance and high performance. We provide interior and exterior coatings for passenger cars, commercial vehicles, custom design vehicles and aircraft. Our brands are recognized throughout the Automotive Refinish Industry as top quality brands.

This campus also houses the Diversified Brands Group, which name fits perfectly, because we create and produce a wide variety of products for a variety of consumers. We are responsible for the research and development of aerosols, caulk, roof coatings, concrete coatings, wood care products, applicators, and other custom products. Some of our brands include: Sherwin-Williams, Krylon, White Lightening, KST, H&C, ML Campbell, Thompson's, Minwax, and Purdy.

Chicago, Illinois-The Arthur W. Steudel Technical Center (AWSTC)Steudel Technical Center

AWSTC houses the R&D technical organizations of Chemical Coatings and Protective and Marine as well as the Chemical Coatings Design Engineering Group.

Chemical Coatings - Our technical organization's work impacts many different market places. Our team of technicians, chemists and scientists are committed to developing innovative products that are used in the heavy equipment, metal and wood furniture, metal building products, and electronics industries. They even work with our own US Military! Additionally, we have a design-engineering group that works in conjunction with our technical staff, sales organization and our customers.

Protective and Marine - Our team of engineers, chemists and technicians are involved in the exciting work of new product development, product line maintenance and improvement, coatings research and testing, color development and process engineering. The specialized coatings developed here are used to beautify and protect the nation's infrastructure in applications as varied as bridge coatings, chemical tank linings, stadiums, structural steel, concrete coatings, manufacturing facilities and numerous others.
