Sherwin-Williams has always been a company that cares for our employees, our workplace and our communities. Whether we’re assessing the programs that are in place to keep our employees safe, or ways that we can conserve resources more effectively, protecting our people and the world we live in is a core value that has been with us since our inception in 1866.  As a core value, Sherwin Williams dedicates significant resources to the implementation and improvement of its EHS programs.
 
A well designed and executed management system is the cornerstone for an implementing an effective environmental, health, and safety program. The focus of the management system is to have the proper systems in place to support the Environmental, Health and Safety Policy in the day-to-day operations and to adequately communicate the plans, procedures, standards, and guidelines (good management practices) and other related protocols appropriate to Sherwin-Williams management personnel and employees. 
 
By 2001 a few sites had formalized their environmental management system by implementing ISO 14001 International Environmental Standard.  In 2008 Sherwin Williams launched a multi-site corporate ISO 14001 program to rapidly expand the number of sites with ISO 14001 certifications.  Refer to Page 33 of the Corporate Social Responsibility Report for the current number and identification of ISO 14001 certified sites.  In 2008, Sherwin-Williams also established goals for reducing greenhouse gas emissions, electricity usage, non-hazardous liquid waste generated, non-hazardous solid waste generated, and hazardous waste generated per unit of production.
 
In 2014, Sherwin-Williams issued the Global Standard defining the Environment, Health and Safety Management System (EHSMS) which included the integration of the environmental, health and safety management systems including but not limited to the elements within ISO 14001, OSHAS 18001 and VPP.  The EHSMS is designed to make these efforts even more clearly defined and consistent across our global operations. The EHSMS assures that as an organization we have a common roadmap for the best practices that help us to work towards an accident and incident free workplace and more sustainable organization. This management system spells out the processes that are in place to maintain a safe and healthy environment, and the roles necessary in assuring these are executed consistently.
 
All Sherwin-Williams operating organizations are required to implement and maintain the systems, tools and processes needed to conform to the expectations described in the EHSMS framework.  Our focus remains on improving the lives of our people and the quality of our products and our processes. The EHSMS is an invaluable tool to help us care for ourselves, our workplace, our community and our environment. A significant element of the EHSMS is continuous improvement.  As part of the continuous improvement effort is the establishment of goals and the tracking of metrics towards meeting these goals.
 
EHS improvement goals have been established throughout the organization.  The goals related to environmental performance improvements are described below.
  • Reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 20% per 100 lb. produced by 2016.
  • Reduce electricity usage by 25% per 100 lb. produced by 2016.
  • Reduce non-hazardous liquid waste generated by 25% per 100 lb. produced by 2016. 
  • Reduce non-hazardous solid waste generated by 25% per 100 lb. produced by 2016. 
  • Reduce hazardous waste generated by 50% per 100 lb. produced by 2016.

All goals are set with a base-line year of 2007.
